Smells like team spirit

Man, I gotta go to bed!

It's 1 a.m. Eastern time and I've been watching this great match between James Blake and Nicolas Kiefer at that team event of team events, the Hopman Cup, one of the staples of the Australian summer season. They've just split two tie-break sets, and it's kind of hard to tell who's gonna pull it out. I guess I'll find out in the morning!

I think this has been one of the most unpredictable Hopman Cups in years: Lleyton Hewitt, reppin' the home continent, has looked good out there, which is kind of surprising considering the surgery he just had; Gilles Simon, a lot of people's "maybe-it" boy, fell in his match against Italy; the U.S., the top seeds, more than likely will go 0-3 because of the lack of match play by my girl Meghann Shaughnessy; and Marat Safin showed up for the event looking like he had gotten his butt whupped by Ivan Drago.

However, the biggest shock has to be Slovakia going 2-0 so far. Dominik Hrbaty (pictured) is playing like it's at least 2004 again, which is good to see because when he's healthy, the dude can ball. Match him up with this year's future top-fiver Dominika Cibulkova, and you have a pretty tough match-up for any of the other teams.

Well, that's it for me; I'm exhausted. I want to give a shout-out to my U.S. crew and hope they defy the odds stacked against them tonight and at least pull off one win!

The results are totally unbelievable and unpredictable. I've never thought the Slovakians can be such a tough match to beat.

I did catch up with the Russian vs Chinese Taipei match awhile ago. I was so devastated with the Taiwanese for not being able to grab the chance to win the bro and sis team :(

The results have been stunning. Simone is my Aussie champ pick. I have a friend who got to watch 3 of the top ten practice and train over the break, and her ravings about him, combined with what we saw him do in the fall, lead me to pick him. I'm still sticking with him, especially since a lot of guys have fallen before they should have. I know now that my limb I'm out on is very shaky.

I haven't been able to watch much of Hopman, but it should be very exciting week.

• Hey HCFoo, what's up? Yeah, that was a tough match to lose. But as I mentioned on your blog, it might actually help them later on.

• Hey heyheyhey. Wow! That's a big call with Simon! We'll see...

It's been pretty entertaining this week, at least from what I've seen.

Hi Van,

I got to watch the Blake/Hewitt match last night. I was amazed at how well both were playing. Blake, because he can be so streaky, and Hewitt, because NOBODY looks that good after hip surgery. Sure, Hewitt lost, but to have that good of movement, to look that fit, that was inspiring. Even their clothes were great. Blake's blues complimented the court, Hewitt popped on it in that bright green, white and black.
I hope tonight's matches are good.
BTW, You betcha I know picking Simone this early, not knowing the draw, is insane. But he's my horse, and I'm riding him until the end!
